Welcome to Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay

Providing volunteer marine search and rescue services, and waterside assistance to the boating public in Hervey Bay waters. We are a highly professional rescue service, available on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The Squadron operates from its Base at Urangan Boat Harbour, from where it covers an area that stretches from Stewart Island in the Great Sandy Strait to Theodolite Creek, north of Woodgate … and east to Long Shoal situated approximately 14 NM NNW of Sandy Cape.

Log On/Log Off Service

Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay also offer a trip logging service, which allows all boaties to call us to record their:

  • Call sign or vessel name
  • Departure point and intended destination
  • Number of people on board
  • Expected time of return

The Marine Rescue Hervey Bay (MRHB) Radio Room is no longer monitoring the 27 MHz channels 88 and 91. In this region the prime means of radio communication for recreational boats is via VHF radios.

Please note that MRHB will continue to monitor VHF channels 16; 22; 67; and 73 from 0600 to 1800 seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Help Our Volunteers Save Lives!

Less than 10% of our operational funding comes from the state government.
Our organisation relies on donations from people just like you to help us provide these
vital marine search and rescue services to the Wide Bay boating community.

What To Do In an Emergency

Your plan may look like this:

  • Make radio contact with Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay  and provide your vessel location; nature of problem; and number of people on board.
  • Ensure vessel security and crew safety.
  • Provide medical aid where necessary.
  • If able, set an anchor and have all crew don life jackets.
  • If unable to use the radio:
  • And other vessels are nearby, discharge orange flares during daylight
  • If other vessels are nearby or you are within five kilometres of land, discharge red hand-held flare every 30 minutes.
  • Discharge parachute rocket flare when completely dark – discharge another one within one minute of the first being let off.
  • If there is no response from the discharge of flares, switch on EPIRB and secure lanyard
  • Prepare vessel and crew for possible overnight wait.
